PPL reveals the most played pop songs and artists of 2011
Adele’s 'Rolling In The Deep' took the top spot in the PPL People’s Pop Chart, with 'Primavera' by Einaudi topping the PPL People’s Classical Chart.
PPL today revealed the annual PPL Charts today at their AGM, held at Kings Place in London. The charts are compiled uniquely by music licensing company PPL, using TV usage, radio airplay and public performance usage data.
Rolling in the Deep was taken from Adele's second studio album 21. The song debuted at number two in the UK, reached number one in 11 countries around the world including America and was the song that made Adele a global name . The song spent 65 weeks in the chart in the UK, has won many awards including three Grammy's and has been featured in numerous 'best of' polls.
"This means a lot so thank you very much and I am told it's the first time three songs by one artist have been in the top five which is pretty incredible" said Adele. "Thank you very much for all your support and hard hard work."
Adele was the undisputed queen of pop in 2011; three of her singles feature in the top five of the PPL People's Pop Chart and she also takes the top spot in the PPL People's Artist Chart which is published for the first time ever today. Adele is signed to independent label Beggars.

The PPL People's Artist Chart is based on the use in 2011 of all the recordings of each artist. This includes recent hits but also timeless classics and reveals which artists the Great British public love listening to the most.

9) Olly Murs

PPL also revealed the most played classical recordings of 2011 in which Einaudi takes the top three spots, the number one being Primavera. The top three most played classical recordings of 2011 are:
1) Einaudi - Primavera - Ludovico Einaudi
2) Einaudi - Nightbook - Ludovico Einaudi
3) Einaudi - The Tower - Ludovico Einaudi
"2011 has been another incredible year for both pop and classical music. Adele is flying the flag high for British music across the globe and her native UK evidently loves her with not only three of her songs in the top five most played pop songs but also topping the Most Played Artist Chart . All the songs and artists featured in our charts are a true representation of the British public's appetite over the past year", said PPL CEO Peter Leathem.
The Pop, Artist and Classical Charts are compiled through PPL's unique music reporting system which is populated with usage data provided from television stations, radio stations, on demand services, and public performance sources.
