Most-played Sheffield artists revealed in ‘People’s Chart’

The top 10 most-played Sheffield music artists in public and in the media since the year 2000 are revealed in an exclusive chart by PPL.

PPL licences the playing of recorded music on radio, television and public places across the UK - and analysed its exclusive data to find out the most popular Sheffield artists of the 21st century so far.

The chart is compiled from PPL's exclusive data which includes TV, radio and online usage as well as songs played in restaurants, bars, pubs, shops, gyms and other public places that use music – giving the chart the title of the 'people's chart.'

1. ALEX TURNER (ARCTIC MONKEYS + THE LAST SHADOW PUPPETS)
2. PAUL CARRACK (ACE + MIKE AND THE MECHANICS + SQUEEZE + SOLO)
3. HUMAN LEAGUE
4. JOE COCKER
5. MOLOKO
6. PULP
7. ABC
8. DEF LEPPARD
9. BABY BIRD
10. TONY CHRISTIE

Music fans will note that the placings of #1 artist Alex Turner and #2 Paul Carrack are based on bodies of work across more than one band – four including his solo output in Carrack's case - but other artists' placings are derived from one-off big hits, such as 'Amarillo' forming the majority of Tony Christie's place and 'You're Gorgeous' doing the same for Baby Bird.

It's also interesting to note that without The Last Shadow Puppets as part of Alex Turner's output, Paul Carrack would be at #1 and the Arctic Monkeys at #2.

The top ten was exclusively revealed on BBC 6music by Steve Lamacq on his afternoon show today (11 October).
Steve said: “Sheffield has produced so many fantastic bands. Tonight [on BBC6Music] this is the first time the PPL chart has been released.

“PPL is the body which licenses music played in public places and the highest grossing artist according to the PPL records is Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys.”

PPL is the UK-based music licensing company which licenses recorded music for broadcast, online and public performance use. Playing music in a business can have significant rewards and PPL is proactively speaking to business owners and managers in Sheffield about the benefits and legalities of music licensing.
